SAN DIEGO
-- The Naval Air Systems Depot at North Island San Diego is undertaking what
can only be described as a mission impossible. Crews are replacing every single
wire in each C-2 Greyhound plane in their fleet.
They will rewire about 30 C-2s, also known as CODS, (carrier on board delivery). From nose to tail, the work includes about 23 miles of wiring.
"The old (wires) were susceptible to moisture and becoming brittle," project engineer Don Sano said.Even more incredible than replacing 23 miles of wiring is that each one is listed and catagorized in a database.
Not only is each pin, connector and clamp listed, but there are photographs of what the assembly is supposed to look like, making future maintenance easier. The first rewired C-2 is back in the fleet. That, if all goes according to plan, will keep the workhorse of the Navy flying until 2020.
Aside from logistical support for the Navy, CODs were also instrumental in delivering relief supplies to the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina.
